Description

Located deep in the southern lunar highlands, Clavius Crater is one of the largest and oldest lunar craters, and the site of a ficitonal lunar settlement in Arthur C. Clarks Space Odyssy series. Clavius Base was placed under a quarantine with the news of the outbreak of an epidemic of Tycho fever when the Tycho Magnetic Anomaly TMA-1 artefact was excavated (Wikipedia).

Numerous craters (and 'craterlets') pepper the floor of Clavius.

Blancanus (partly shadowed) and Scheiner (fully shadowed) lie in the background. In the foreground, the 51-km-wide Porter crater with its central peak is superimposed on the NE rim of Clavius whilst directly up the image Rutherford overlaps the SE rim of Clavius. North is down. I have always liked the radiating topographic irregularities on the north side of Rutherford that lead down to the largest of the 4 arcuate-arrayed crater floor impacts.

Stack of 1000 frames.

Processing: Autostakkert 3, Registrax 6, Lightroom, Topaz Denoise.

Some of the best, most stable atmospheric conditions I have had with the 8 inch Newtonian in the last 4 years.

Skywatcher 8 inch/f5, ASI224mc, Televue 5x Powermate.
